flu 1918 Timeline & Pandemic comprehension

By the end of December in 1918 the pandemic was over.
But there were a lot of deaths. In a few months the death toll
was nine thousand, for New Zealand there were about eighteen
thousand people that died during the war. There were also three
other influenza pandemics and they are 1957, 1968 and 2009.
There was a definite possibility for the outbreak on the scale of
the 1918 pandemic. There is also another pandemic called covid - 19
that started in 2019 (It is a novel coronavirus (type A), which is why
it's called COVID-19). The Covid - 19 started in china then it started
to spread all over the world, In NZ we have 1,112 confirmed, 1,065
and 16 deaths but all worldwide there is 2,682,225 confirmed, 732,647
and 187,330. In 2020 we have better living conditions and better
ways to communicate (internet, TV, phones) and better hygiene
(showering etc) than the people did in 1918 so we are less likely to
get a virus like the flu. However, we are increasing our chances of
getting a virus because of industrial farming, and in

Why did some people think the 1918 flu was a return of the plague? Because you would
have cyanosis and that’s when you have lost blood and your skin changes colour.

Is it true that RMS Niagara brought the flu to NZ? Yes  How do you know? Because the soldiers
had the flu from the war and other times and when they went around the world they kept giving
the flu to other countries but there were already some cases in NZ before the RMS came.

Why was this virus so deadly? The virus was so deadly because it would spread your
germs to other people and back then the people didn’t know that it was a bad thing to be
gathered together in the same room would make the virus spread more.

Who were the heroes during this crisis? Children known as boy scouts and adults Explain
why. Because the children helped deliver and prepare the food, The adults helped drive the
cars and built coffins for the dead people.

What limitations did people living in 1918 have during this crisis? (hint: think about what
would have made it hard for them to survive this time, things they didn’t have then that we
have now).

Why is November 1918 known as ‘black November’ in NZ? Number of people that died and
also when your skin changed colour.

Name 3 things that increase the likelihood of a pandemic happening and explain why
they do so:

Not washing your hands

 Not showing

  Not staying at home

Name 3 things that decrease the likelihood of a pandemic happening and explain why

 Staying at home

Explain what a vaccine is and how it works. It creates antibodies and the antibodies
help you fight the virus.

Explain what is happening in these pictures - write in your own words. They used the spray
inhalers to take all the germs out of their body, Celebrating cause soldiers came back, children
also known as boy scouts delivering food to the sick people and adults looking after the sick
people.

1918 flu medicines

Vaccine:are a little bit of the virus that is dead so your body can make antibodies that can fight off the virus.
Zinc Sulphate-a medicine
Formally improved -Approved from the Government
Medical Benefit- Helping your body fight.
Undoubtedly- probably, definitely
Spray inhalers - a gas you breathe in through your nose/mouth, think of an asthma inhaler.

benefit/beneficial - mean the same thing

Hope:In those days they didn’t have any vaccine, Vaccine is something that makes antibodies and can fight off the virus/flu. Zinc sulphate gas is a medicine which they thought would get rid of the virus/flu. A few years later they found out that the spray inhalers didn’t do anything because they were all crowded together in the same room and that made it worse. Later on when the war finished everyone was excited and they were all together again and celebrating. That way the flu spread more and that caused more deaths.

The Medical people that were in New Zealand were the first to get sick.
The volunteers that were not trained helped the sick people because 1/3
of doctors and 1/4 of nurses were overseas, and the sick people needed
help. The soup kitchens were set up by some children, The children such as
boy scouts helped prepare, deliver the food and peel the vegetables. Also the
adults drove cars as makeshift ambulances or built coffins for the dead people.
